About
Mostly self-taught, my early works were influenced by my training in Technical Drawing.
I drew from this knowledge when making ink drawings of the Cape Dutch architecture which was a favourite subject of mine.
Clean lines carefully measured and true to life were and still are an easy way to express my art.
I attended the Ruth Prowse School of Art in Cape Town, where I learnt to explore different styles, mediums and subjects.
This helped loosen my style and to explore the use of colour more.
It was from this experience that I began to learn the art of portraiture.
The ability to take a person and render a portrait which portrays more than just their image fascinates me and I am always looking for interesting subjects to paint.
Architecture, however, remains part of my art portfolio, and I enjoy interpreting a building’s mood and time in space with colour.
My favourite medium is acrylic but my watercolour journals allow me to make quick sketches of scenes to paint later.
Travels to Italy and the UK continue to provide inspiration for the images I paint in my studio in Auckland.
I believe that one can never stop learning the essence of what makes a good painting, and I am not afraid to admit that sometimes a painting can get the better of me and may find itself abandoned in the cobwebs of my studio.
It is my love for the art of creation that keeps me putting another blank canvas on my easel, picking up my brushes and starting again.
